Courses

LIS440: Archival Use and Access (taught by Prof Wisser)
Explores access to and use of archives and manuscript collections within the framework of archival description and representation. How archives are described and the surrogates that are used to represent them profoundly impact their access and use and are central to the archives profession. Students will explore various types of archival use including exhibits (physical and virtual) in addition to the creation of surrogates for primary sources and will gain a theoretical and practical understanding of EAD (Encoded Archival Description), as well as other emerging metadata standards. Required course for Archives Management Concentration. Prerequisites: LIS 400, LIS 415, and LIS 438.

LIS439: Preservation Management in Libraries and Archives (taught by Prof Cloonan)
This course covers the fundamentals of planning and managing programs of prevention and remedial treatment for the preservation of information resources in libraries and archives. The study of the nature of all types of materials and the factors contributing to their deterioration serves as background. Preservation planning topics, such as environmental control and light, security, risk management, fire prevention, housekeeping and storage, general collections maintenance and testing methods, are covered. Additional topics include: emergency planning in the areas of preparedness, mitigation and response; selection of materials for basic repair, conservation or reformatting; budgeting for preservation activities; preservation training for staff and users; digital preservation; and cooperative programs. Course includes readings, guest lectures, media presentations, field trips, demonstrations, and individual projects.

for LIS440 -- LIS 415: Information Organization and LIS438: Intro to Archives
for LIS439 -- no prerequisites

Program Description

It is strongly recommended that students only take one course to allow for the best possible experience of Seoul.

The course will be hosted by the LIS department at Yonsei University, the oldest and most prestigious LIS program in Korea.

Three graduate credits; six graduate credits if students choose to register for both courses.

Faculty Information

Katherine Wisser comes to GSLIS from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where she earned her Ph.D. in 2009 and where she completed her master's degree in library and information science in 2000. Wisser also holds a master's degree in early American history from the University of New Hampshire. While in North Carolina, Wisser spent five years as the Metadata Coordinator for NC ECHO, a statewide program that encourages and supports use of appropriate metadata by member institutions to ensure online access to cultural heritage information facilitation, workshop instruction and individual institutional consultation. Prior to that, she spent two years as a Libraries Fellow in the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries Cataloging and Special Collections departments. Wisser's articles have been published in, among others, North Carolina Libraries, Library HiTech, and Library Resources and Technical Services. She currently sits on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Library Metadata. Wisser joined the Simmons GSLIS faculty in Fall 2009.
