Program Description:
IEC logoThe MassArt International Exchange Programs are full immersion programs at reciprocal exchange partner host institutions. Students enroll directly in the host institution abroad but pay MassArt tuition and fees. Most forms of financial aid apply, but it is important to check with the financial aid office for more information. Be sure to visit our website for more information on the steps to study abroad.

Willem de Kooning Academy is located in the harborside city center of Rotterdam, Netherlands. Its central location affords easy access to major transport hubs, the Rotterdam Museumspark, and stunning works of architecture including the Kijk-Kubus (Cube Houses).  Like most regions in the Netherlands, Rotterdam experiences a temperate oceanic climate with mild summers and winters.

Application Form • Letter of Motivation • Nomination by your school • Portfolio • 1 Photograph  • Copy of Passport

Please note: You may not apply to an outside program until a completed IEC Semester Away Learning Agreement has been submitted to the IEC.

Term 1: September - January
Term 1 Deadline: May 1st

Term 2: January - July
Term 2 Deadline: November 1st

Credit and Classes:
Students on exchange at Willem de Kooning generally take a full semester course load and receive 24-30 ECTS credits (12-15 US credits).

Where students live:
Once accepted to Willem de Kooning Academy, the Housing Office of Rotterdam University assists students in securing housing. You can find more information about housing here.
All students on exchange find accommodation however accommodation is never guaranteed by the host institution and is fully the student’s responsibility.

Costs to Consider:
In addition to paying MassArt tuition and fees, you should consider the additional costs of studying abroad. You are responsible for purchasing plane tickets, housing, health and travel insurance, food, additional local travel and personal expenses. It may be against visa regulations in your study abroad country for you to work. If you are allowed to work, it may be difficult to to find short-term employment. Be prepared!
