Wentworth’s Architecture Department Study Abroad Programs in Berlin and Montpellier have been an extraordinary success and achievement.  Students have worked on design projects of their 4th year courses in Wentworth’s studios in Berlin and Montpellier. They have traveled to numerous cities throughout Europe, surveying the historical and new urban design and architecture --buildings and cities of unprecedented importance -- and they have experienced living in an important and wonderful city with the broadening exposure to its people, culture and history.  Students have the opportunity of living in apartments in neighborhoods near the city centers -- in close proximity to the cultural, historical, and architectural highlights that these great cities offer.

The Berlin Study Abroad Program is directed by Professor Rolf Backmann, architect and urban designer, and the Montpellier Study Abroad Program is directed by Professor Nicolas Westphal, architect.  Both Professor Backmann and Professor Westphal have taught and been associated with our Study Abroad Programs for many years.  Additional faculty of architects and professors are selected to teach the required courses for the term.  The term is scheduled for studio sessions where students work on projects in architecture, urban design, and building technology in Berlin and Montpellier, similar to studio projects for students who are at Wentworth.  Special trips to major European cities are scheduled between the studio sessions.

As a participant, you will live with WIT students in an apartment arranged for you in Berlin or Montpellier and work on Berlin- or Montpellier-based design projects in the WIT studio.  Studio space is located near the central region of Berlin or Montpellier, adjacent to a subway stop, with convenient access to the city center. You will travel to numerous cities throughout Europe, surveying historical and contemporary architecture, urban design and building technology.  You will have the opportunity to visit extraordinary cities and buildings, and also have the experience living in a great city, Berlin or Montpellier, where you will have broad exposure to German or French culture and history.

The academic term is scheduled for studio sessions in Berlin or Montpellier, where students work on projects in architecture and building technology, similar to the 4th year studio program for students who are at Wentworth for the same term. Students complete all their regular course requirements during the term abroad, and return to Boston on track to resume the normal program to graduation.
