Darkness in the City of Lights

Duration: Fall 2009 Semester and January 2-10, 2010
Credit: Four credits
Price: $1,800 NOT including airfare. (Airfare is additional and
must be purchased by November 15, 2009)
Price includes: Round-trip airport transfer in Paris, seven
nights hotel lodging double occupancy, unlimited subway/bus
pass, fve breakfasts, two dinners, two lunches, one tea, most
group museum entrance fees and excursions.

Course:
Darkness in the City of Lights: Contrasting Views of Paris in Modern French Literature and Culture (LANG 2215).

Program is open to Emmanuel and all COF students.The objective of this program is to provide COF students with the opportunity to experience the beauty and vitality of Paris through the study of important literary works that take place in this magnifcent city.

Program Highlights:

  • Spend one week in Paris immersed in the sights, sounds and scintillating culture of this exciting city.
  • Discover the boulevards and bridges, canals and cafés, cemeteries and scenery, monuments and museums, and other magical venues that have made Paris the most visited city in the world
  • Earn credit towards fulfllment of Emmanuel College’s Aesthetic Inquiry requirement.
  • Earn credit towards completion of Emmanuel College’s French Language Certifcate.

Please note:
  • This course is conducted in English, but students of
    Advanced French have the option of taking this course in
    French.
  • Students can expect extensive walking on the streets of
    Paris and stairs of the Métro public transportation system.
  • This class is limited to 12 students.

    Faculty Information:

    Cheryl Tano is a Special Instructor of French and Spanish
    in the Department of Foreign Languages at Emmanuel
    College, and also teaches a First Year Seminar in Travel
    Literature. She is a co-author of ESPACES: Rendez-
    vous avec le monde francophone, and PROMENADES:
    À travers le monde francophone, and has published re-
    views and articles in International Travel News. Although
    her permanent residence is in Boston, Cheryl spends a
    few months of the year in Paris and in the French Alps.
